Russia is preparing for the first polar bears total accounting in the Arctic since the Soviet Union03.08.2020
On August 1, the project «Master of the Arctic»was launched in the Nenets, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous districts and Dolgan-Nenets district. Polar bears will be counted from the La-8 amphibious aircraft. The project was launched thanks to the joint efforts of Rosprirodnadzor, the center for Arctic initiatives and the Clean seas international environmental Fund.
In 2020, within the framework of the national project «Ecology», preparations for the polar bears total registration in the Russian Arctic began. It is planned to complete the work on accounting for polar bears, which is paid for by Rosneft, in 2023.
In the spring, polar bears were counted in Chukotka. The work is carried out here every year and every year Chukotka specialists agree with their American colleagues from Alaska on quotas for shooting rare predators. In Russia, polar bear hunting is prohibited, so only hunters in Alaska use their quota, often inviting non-native residents who want to get a rare trophy to hunt.
In the USSR, since the 70s of the last century, the polar bears accounting was carried out annually, but over the past 20 years, bears were counted only by experts and based on the results of counting dens, which is not as effective as visual accounting using small aircraft. In addition, taking into account polar bears using small aircraft, it will be possible to assess the gender composition and cubs.
