The growth of cargo traffic along the Northeast Passage is gradually recovering09.11.2020
According to PortNews, in January-October 2020, the cargo traffic volume along the Northeast Passage increased compared to the same period last year 2019. 26.53 million tons of cargo passed through the Northeast Passage, which is 2.9% more than in 2019.
The table above shows the Northeast Passage for April-October 2020 by month compared to last year. As can be seen from the table, the COVID-19 first wave significantly affected the cargo transportation volume along the Northeast Passage. At the same time, the 2nd wave passes almost unnoticed. In September alone, shipments sank by 1 million tons. Apparently, a large-scale lockdown during the COVID-19 2nd wave in the countries that consume products transported along the Northeast Passage was not realised. There are 2 months left to wait for the navigation 2020 results on the Northeast Passage, but after getting the result, it will be impossible to determine the trend and say what is waiting for the Northeast Passage in the coming years.
