The MOSAiC Arctic expedition returned to the Arctic ice24.06.2020
The MOSAiC Arctic expedition was forced to interrupt its drift in the Arctic, where 300 scientists from different countries are conducting their research in shifts. These are mainly Arctic nature and climate studies. Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, it became impossible to resupply and change scientists and teams. Therefore, on June 4, the icebreaker Polarstern approached Svalbard, where it replaced the crew and a group of scientists and replenished supplies.
The MOSAiC expedition carried out a crew change and resupply until Sunday, June 7, after which it went back to the same ice floe that it was forced to leave due to the pandemic. By June 18, the MOSAiC expedition reached the ice floe where the equipment was installed. The ice floe was in a satisfactory condition and the icebreaker Polarstern will continue the planned research.
