The polar bear cubs will be saved, and the polar bears will be driven away from the settlements. The International Conference The Polar Bear Universe the 2nd day.29.09.2021
Today, on September 29, the International Conference The Polar Bear Universe continued. It takes place in ZOOM. The conference program has not yet been obtained. If it works out, I’ll share it. So far, the last 3 reports at the conference for today are:
Saving polar bears cubs logistics. Marina Galishchuk.
Marina Galishchuk told about the logistics of saving polar bears cubs. She is a Leading Specialist in the Logistics Department and Coordinator of the Union of Zoos polar bear program at the Moscow Zoo. The saving polar bear cubs left without a mother is especially important for Chukotka and Alaska. In particular, Marina Grischuk noted that there are not enough overexposure points for cubs. And local authorities do not always have money for a rescue operation. According to WWF, the rescut can cost from 150 to 500 thousand rubles (USD 2000-7000).
Bear Patrols Operation Principles. Varvara Semyonova.
But WWF (World Wildlife Fund) representative Varvara Semenova report was devoted to the Bear Patrols principles. Varvara Semenova is the Project Coordinator of the WWF Marine Mammal Research Research Center. Now Bear patrols are working in the village of Amderma in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. In addition, there are Bear patrols in the villages of Vankarem, Billings and Ryrkaypiy in Chukotka. One the Bear Patrol application in Yakutia is being considered. Bears in the villages are attracted by municipal waste and dead walruses carcasses in large rookeries. For example, there is a large walrus rookery near the village of Ryrkaypiy and polar bears come here every year. The bear patrol has to take up to 100 walrus carcasses away from the village. An adult individual weighs about 1 ton on average. In general, Bear Patrols work effectively and thanks to them it is possible to drive away bears. Quadracopters are very helpful to Bear Patrols in their work. But the problem of municipal waste storage remains. And WWF is looking for a solution to the problem of storage and disposal (incineration) of municipal waste.
